What Is Hair Transplant Shock Loss?
Hair transplant shock loss is a temporary shedding of existing or newly transplanted hair that can occur after hair restoration surgery. Although it may be alarming, shock loss is generally a normal part of the healing process and does not usually indicate that the procedure has failed.
Why Does Shock Loss Occur?
Hair follicles can temporarily enter the resting (telogen) phase after the minor trauma of surgery. This causes some hairs to shed before new growth begins.
When Does Shock Loss Happen?
- Typically begins within the first few weeks after surgery.
- Usually peaks during the first one to three months.
- New hair growth generally starts around three to four months after the procedure.
Is Shock Loss Permanent?
In most cases, no. The affected follicles remain healthy, and new hair gradually grows back as the follicles return to the active growth phase. Following your post-operative instructions and attending follow-up appointments helps ensure the best recovery.
